Lamborghini’s CEO says orders for the hybrid Revuelto show “incredible” demand from wealthy car buyers

In the previous month, Lamborghini launched its first ever plug-in hybrid supercar, the Revuelto, which already has a waiting list and two years worth of orders, CEO Stephan Winkelmann told CNBC. Moreover, the orders come despite the global disruption in financial markets and banking systems in the previous months.

“The resilience of our customers, with everything that is happening in the last 24 months, is incredible,” Winkelmann said. “We don’t see any slowdown in order intake for buying cars like ours,” he added.

The gallop of orders for the latest supercar, the Revuelto, and others highlights the continued strength of the wealthy consumer despite slowdowns in other segments of the consumer economy.

On the other hand, the share price of Ferrari has surged 27% so far this year on the back of continued demand for trophy cars, especially in the U.S.

Ferrari, Bentley, Rolls Royce, and other top automotive brands reported enhancing record sales and production in the previous year.

In the previous year, Lamborghini recorded a production of 9,233 vehicles globally, which is up 10% in comparison with the record of 2021. Winkelmann also stated that it’s too early to evaluate production for the current year, but if orders continue as they have in the first quarter, the company is eligible to exceed its record from the previous year.

The key dilemma for supercar manufacturers like Lamborghini, though, is how to identify their brands in the age of electrification. Supercar manufacturers, known for their strong and thunderous engines, are attempting to produce silent, high-performance EVs that are unique enough from Tesla and other brands to attract greater premiums.

Winklemann also proclaimed that “Every Lamborghini model launched after the recent supercar, the Revuelto, will be a hybrid, with plug-in versions in its SUV Urus and sportscar Huracan, the launch of which is being expected in the upcoming years.

Also, Lamborghini plans to launch its first fully electric model around 2028 or 2029.

Moreover, by launching the Revuelto, Lamborghini has utilised the best of both worlds. By pairing three electric motors with a new 6.5-litre, naturally drawn V12 engine for a combined 1,001 horsepower. Lamborghini has estimated a top speed of over 217 miles per hour and proclaimed that it can go from 0 to 62 mph in under 2.5 seconds.

Also, by obtaining hybridization, the Revuelto saves 30% more fuel efficiency.

The most tempting aspect of the Revuelto, according to seasoned auto collectors, is owning one of the final generations of V12 supercars to be built and marketed.

“The team worked hard on this car for years. The reception of the customers is positive in two ways, because on one hand they recognize it’s a true Lamborghini. And on the other side, there is no fear about having a hybrid car,” Winklemann said.

He also said that the Revuelto is likely to sell above and better than its top-of-the-line supercar model, the Aventador.

As per statistics evaluated by the firm, Lamborghini sold over 11,000 Aventadors over its decade-plus life. He said demand from the U.S.—Lamborghini’s largest market—has been significantly strong.

However, on the other hand, the China market remains unknown since the country just came out of a severe lockdown, Winkelmann said, adding that demand in South Korea “exploded” in the previous year.

Central Europe and Australia also stood strong, he added.

“In the U.S., California, Florida, Texas, and the Northeast are always good for positive surprises,” Winklemann said.

It is estimated that production of the Revuelto will start in the second half of 2023.

“And then next year, we go full speed and we will see how the market is moving,” Winklemann concluded.
